WEST Ham United were one of the classiest teams in British football in the mid-60s and now those glory days of FA Cup and European trophy success are set to be rekindled through the eyes of former Hammers favourite Jack Burkett.
Football World is pleased to announce the launch, in October 2009, of WEST HAM IN THE SIXTIES - THE JACK BURKETT STORY.
Written by Hammers supporter and EX magazine contributor Terry Roper, this biography of former full-back Burkett covers the peak years of his career with his local team, including his role in winning the 1964 FA Cup final against Preston North End and, returning to Wembley again a year later, the European Cup Winners' Cup final against the German side, TSV Munich 1860.
In addition to getting Jack's take on his illustrious World Cup-winning team-mates Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, this 248-page softback also examines the players' turbulent relationship with manager Ron Greenwood. Ann Burkett Jack's wife also reveals her thoughts on the West Ham players' wives Tina Moore and the other WAGs of the 60s who joined their husbands on the team's groundbreaking tour of the USA in 1963.
Fully illustrated with superb black and white photographs from the period, includign many from Jack's own private archives, this book is a must for any Hammers supporters who was lucky enough to follow their team during the greatest period in the club's chequered history.
There are additional chapters on Jack's latter days in football with Charlton Athletic, Millwall, Southend United, plus his eventful coaching experiences overseas, in Ireland (where he tangled with the IRA), Norway and Saudi Arabia (where he witnessed a beheading!), before returning to England to coach under his old West Ham defensive colleague, Bobby Moore, back at Southend.
WEST HAM IN THE SIXTIES The Jack Burkett Story will be published in October 2009. The cover price will be £15.00 but anyone ordering direct from us at Football World will make a saving of £3.00 (post-free in UK) and each copy purchased from us will be personally signed by Jack himself.
